Historic Centre and Old Town

A stroll through Salò’s historic centre takes you through the oldest part of the town, between Piazza Carmine, the Fossa and the streets leading down towards the lake. The tourist leaflet highlights this area as the place where traces of the town’s past are still visible: ancient stately homes, 17th-century palaces and urban vistas that bear witness to Salò’s historic role in the Brescia side of Lake Garda.
This area also includes the Clock Tower and the Porta San Giovanni, the two gates leading into the ancient village. Built in the 14th century and restored over the centuries, they once protected the village and still bear the mark of Venetian rule in the form of the winged lion. The original clock, dating from 1766, is described in the documentation as still in working order.

The Lakeside Promenade, Piazza Vittoria and the Palazzo della Magnifica Patria

The lakeside promenade is one of Salò’s most recognisable areas and links the panoramic views of Lake Garda with the town’s main civic landmarks. Here you’ll find walking paths, jetties, tourist facilities and various monuments, making this area ideal both for a leisurely stroll and for enjoying evening and seasonal events.
The Palazzo della Magnifica Patria, now the town hall, is presented as a symbol of the Golden Age of the Serenissima. Built in the 16th century and overlooking the lakefront, it still features a loggia, frescoes, commemorative plaques, effigies and evidence of the city’s time under Venetian rule.
Also located in the same area is the War Memorial in Piazza della Vittoria, the Statue of Giuseppe Zanardelli in Piazza Zanardelli, the a half-length bust of Gasparo da Salò between the Palazzo della Magnifica Patria and the Zanardelli Lakeside Promenade, as well as works such as The Lady of the Lake on the Antiche Rive lakeside promenade.

The Cathedral Area, Mu.Sa. and musical culture

The area around the Duomo and the Mu.Sa. embodies a significant part of Salò’s cultural identity. The Cathedral of Santa Maria Annunziata, dating from 1453, is regarded as the city’s most architecturally significant building. Designed by Filippo delle Vacche da Caravaggio and built in the late Gothic style, it houses works by Zenone Veronese and Paolo Veneziano, frescoes by Alielse and an impressive high altar with a gilded retable and wooden statues.
The Mu.Sa. Salò Museum It is housed within the church and the Somasco College of Santa Giustina, a complex founded in 1587. The museum tells the story of Salò through art collections, stringed instruments, antique machinery and themed exhibitions that bring together history, culture, the economy and the local area.
The figure of Gasparo of Salò It reinforces the city’s musical identity. The material presents him as a musical genius from Salò, regarded as one of the greatest violin makers in history and closely linked to the tradition of the modern violin; this has also given rise to musical events such as the’Garda Summer Music Festival “Gasparo da Salò” and other local festivals.

Churches and spiritual sites

As well as the cathedral, the tourist guide suggests an itinerary of churches scattered across the city centre, the lakeside and the hillside areas. These include the Church of the Visitation in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, the Church of St John the Beheaded in Piazza Zanardelli, the Church of St Bernardino in Piazza San Bernardino and the Church of St Anthony of Padua in Piazza Sant’Antonio.

The list continues with the Church of Our Lady of the Banks on Via Pietro da Salò, the Church of St John the Evangelist in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II and the Church of St Bartholomew in the San Bartolomeo area. This layout makes it possible to create a themed trail dedicated to sacred art, religious heritage and the relationship between the town centre and the surrounding countryside.

Nature, hiking and Mount San Bartolomeo

Salò is presented as the gateway to the Alto Garda Bresciano Park, thanks to its sheltered and sunny location on a wide inlet. The area offers trails suitable for various levels, with views over the gulf and links to the surrounding hills.
The material outlines various routes: the Lakeside Promenade an easy route of about 3 km, the path towards Our Lady of the River about 2 km, the’The Monte di San Bartolomeo Circular Walk 11.7 km, starting from Piazza del Carmine, the first stage of the Bassa Via del Garda from Salò to Toscolano and the route towards the The Little Church of the Alpini departing from Piazzale Ferrari.

Beaches, sport, the harbour and tourist facilities

Villa di Salò stands out in the calendar as a vibrant venue for sporting, evening and family events. The programme includes the “Scurtarola de Vila de Salò” fun run, the green volleyball tournament at the Paolo VI Oratory, the Country Festival at the Villa Oratory and open-air cinema screenings at the Canipari Park.
This area could be developed as a complement to the historic centre: less monumental, but very useful for showcasing everyday life in Salò – its community life and green spaces – with events dedicated to families, sport and the local community.

The Lighthouse and the Harbour

The lighthouse is the quintessential symbol of Desenzano; it features in almost all the town’s logos and is the main attraction for tourists.

The lighthouse lantern, consisting of a dioptric device fuelled by paraffin, remained in use until 1903, when electric lighting was introduced, having already been in use in the town of Desenzano since 1899.

To this day, the building serves as a landmark for the whole community and is the point of arrival for the boats and ships moored in the harbour.

Rambotti Archaeological Museum

The museum, named after Giovanni Rambotti, houses an extraordinary collection of Bronze Age archaeological artefacts that document the development of pile-dwelling settlements on the shores of Lake Garda.

This is an interactive museum that offers sensory experiences which transport visitors back to prehistoric times, thanks in part to state-of-the-art technology.

On display in the museum are artefacts from the Lavagnone pile-dwelling site, the most recent of which is an ancient dugout canoe.

Oil and Wine Tasting

Food and wine are one of Desenzano’s many highlights. The local wines include Lugana, classic white Garda, Chiaretto, red Garda, Groppello and San Martino della Battaglia DOC.

Another gem of the region is its PDO extra virgin olive oil, characterised by an extremely low acidity level, which makes it particularly easy to digest and, as a result, highly sought-after.

The high quality of this Garda olive oil is monitored by its own consortium and by a certification body in accordance with a set of production regulations, which are among the most stringent in the country.

Golf

Gardagolf Country Club, in Soiano del Lago, offers its members and guests a technically challenging course set in breathtaking surroundings, always maintained to the highest standards, alongside a welcoming clubhouse offering a wide range of first-class facilities.

The Chervò Golf Hotel SPA & Resort is in San Vigilio, just a few minutes’ drive from the most beautiful resorts on Lake Garda and the most famous theme parks.

Calvagese, on the other hand, is home to the Arzaga Golf Club, a club of international renown; it attracts a great many guests who return here regularly every year.

Sailing and Cycling

Fraglia Vela, the DIELLEFFE Sailing Club, the Lega Navale and many other organisations offer opportunities to hire boats or take part in this sport.

Desenzano also frequently hosts top-level sailing competitions and, thanks to local organisations, places great emphasis on inclusivity, offering courses specifically for people with disabilities. “Lake likes bikes – The lake loves bikes”It’s not just a slogan, but a reality to be taken at face value.”.

Lake Garda is best enjoyed at a leisurely pace, without any stress.

Go-karting and Clay Pigeon Shooting

The South Garda Karting circuit is situated in the nearby town of Lonato. It is one of the most important karting circuits on the international scene.

As well as official races, the circuit offers visitors the chance to experience the world of karting through the hire of karts for adults and children, as well as two-seater karts.

The Trap Concaverde shooting range in Lonato comprises twelve shooting lanes, arranged side by side along a longitudinal axis. The orientation of the shooting direction ensures maximum usability, whilst minimising the disruption caused to shooters by direct sunlight.
